💡 Trick of the Week: “Light It Up!”

From the glamorous desk of: BISCUIT 🐾

🚨 Light It Up, Darling! 🚨

Listen up, floofs and friends.

This week’s trick is for all you fabulous canines tired of your humans mumbling things like, “Ugh, I forgot to turn off the light” while already in bed. WE DESERVE BETTER. We are not here to live in human incompetence. We are here to light up a room—literally.

That’s right. This week, I’m teaching you and your hooman how to turn the lights on and off. Because sometimes, the drama is better in the dark.

⚡ What You’ll Need:

  • A light switch (duh)

  • A stick-on target (like a sticky note or one of those fancy clicky lights)

  • A light switch extender or smart switch if you’re vertically challenged like moi

  • Hooman-approved treats (not the cheap cardboard ones!)

  • Clicker or marker word ("Yes!" or “Brilliant!”)

Good lights make you look bootiful!

🎓 Step-by-Step from Professor Biscuit:

1. Target Practice

As you the hooman, you need to teach your dog how to touch a sticky note or target with their nose or paw.

💁‍♀️ I recommend the paw. It's more dramatic. Also doubles as a slap if needed.

Reward every time your dog bops the target. Yes. Even if they just look at it like they might bop it. It’s a first step!

2. Transfer That Target to the Wall

Stick that target on the light switch. Boom. Fancy wall.

Now practice the bops there. Reward every good hit. Don’t worry if your dog doesn’t hit the switch perfectly at first. We're aiming for effort, not Olympic accuracy.

3. Add the Cue Word

Once your dog is consistently paw-smacking the switch, start saying your command before you do it. Some favorites:

  • “Light it up!”

  • “Showtime!” (my favorite)

  • “On!” / “Off!” (if you’re boring)

Attention dogs: Your hooman may yell “NOOOO” the first time you turn you hit a switch attached to an outlet. Especially if the outlet is powering their computer during a Zoom call. That just means it’s working.

4. Fade the Target

Eventually, remove the sticky note.

Attention dogs: Don’t panic if the sticky note disappears. You’re fabulous. You’ll know what to do. Your cue word is your stage light now.

In the Video above, you can see me demonstrating the “Lights” trick. And I’m only 7 months old!

🧠 Biscuit’s Brainy Bonus Tips:

  • If you're too short to reach, get one of those dog-friendly light switch extenders. Or make your hooman carry you.

  • Make it a party trick. Turn lights off with flair. Add a little spin if you’re feeling spicy.

  • Never turn on the light during a scary movie. That can be SCARY!

Got the move down? I wanna see it. Send me your best “LIGHT IT UP” videos or photos for a chance to be featured in next week’s newsletter.

Bonus points if you wear a cape or sunglasses while doing it.

💋 Parting Words from Your Favorite Sheltie

Remember: You’re not just a dog. You’re the light technician of your home.
So go out there, throw some paw power on that wall, and make electricity your b*tch.
